After the success of the Graham Audio LS3/5 and LS5/9, Derek Hughes and his colleagues started looking for a speaker that was somewhere between the two in terms of size. The result is the Chartwell LS6. A custom 6-inch long-throw bass drive unit coupled with a compact 17-liter cabinet provides bass extension and power handling comparable to the LS5/9. The custom-made 19mm dome tweeter reaches over 20 kHz. The overall response retains the smoothness of both the LS3/5 and LS5/9. A large rear-mounted port delivers effortless bass, while the cabinet size has been minimized to fit easily into typical domestic environments. An advanced crossover network combines the two units and equalizes the overall response for optimal free-space performance. A switch on the front panel sets the tweeter level to +1dB or +2dB. This can be useful in situations where the listening position is off-axis. As with all Graham Audio speakers, the cabinet uses classic BBC 'thin-wall' construction, where the panels are mass-loaded to ensure resonances are moved away from the critical midrange, and a layer of Rockwool is held in place by fabric for air damping. Hand matched veneers are applied and finished to a very high standard. The grille has been carefully designed to minimize diffraction effects and is held in place by hidden magnets. The LS6 is a contemporary speaker with a beautiful retro look.
